What Format, Template and Paragraphs Change in Page Preview
Format sets the page size, Template sets the fonts and design style, and Paragraphs chooses Block or Indent for your printed book.
Format sets your page size, Template sets the interior design style (fonts, spacing and heading styles), and Paragraphs chooses spaced or indented paragraphs. All three control the print layout and appear in Page Preview.

Where are these dropdowns?
Click Page Preview at the top of the editor. The Format, Template and Paragraphs dropdowns appear there. They are hidden while you are in the Visual Editor, because they have no effect there. They only control the print and PDF layout.
What does Format do?
Format sets the page size for Page Preview and for PDF export. An example is "Paperback 6×9". ePub is the default for new manuscripts.
Export offers ePub, plus PDF in six sizes:
- Paperback 6×9, 5.5×8.5 and 5.25×8.
- Workbook 8.5×11.
- Hardcover 5.5×8.5 and 6×9.
Hardcover is a PDF size choice, not a separate file type. See How do I export an ePub or a PDF in the right size?
What does Template do?
Template sets the interior design style: fonts, spacing and heading styles. The default is Classic Authority.
What does Paragraphs do?
Paragraphs offers two styles:
- Block (spaced) is the default.
- Indent (traditional) is the traditional paragraph style.
Will my choice change my exported PDF?
Page Preview is built by the same print engine, and from the same request, as the real PDF export. The whole book is laid out and the preview opens at the chapter you are editing, so every chapter page looks exactly like the exported PDF. See How do Page Preview and Full Screen work?
Can I reach these options on a phone?
On a phone, Full Screen opens the preview over the whole screen. Tap ⚙ to open the format, template, pull-quote and action-box options, and tap it again to put them away.
Where do Pull Quote and Action Box fit in?
❝ Pull Quote is a per-chapter toggle in Page Preview. See How do I add a pull quote or an action box?
For the full tour, see How to Use Page Preview and Templates.
