Amazon KDP counts content as AI-generated when an AI-based tool created the text, images, or translations, and you must disclose it. It counts content as AI-assisted when you created it yourself and used AI to edit, refine, error-check, brainstorm, or otherwise improve it, and you do not have to disclose that.
KDP draws this line in its Content Guidelines. This page explains both sides in plain words, with KDP's own definitions, so you can see exactly where you stand.
What does KDP require you to disclose?
KDP requires you to inform it of AI-generated content. That covers text, images, and translations. You do it when you publish a new book, or when you edit and republish an existing book through KDP. AI-generated images include cover and interior images and artwork.
KDP is just as clear about the other side: "You are not required to disclose AI-assisted content."
What counts as AI-generated?
Content an AI-based tool created. KDP's definition: "We define AI-generated content as text, images, or translations created by an AI-based tool."
If you used an AI-based tool to create the actual content, whether text, images, or translations, KDP counts it as AI-generated, "even if you applied substantial edits afterwards."
In plain words, editing generated content heavily does not turn it into AI-assisted content.
What counts as AI-assisted?
Content you created yourself, with AI helping you improve it. KDP says that if you created the content yourself and used AI-based tools to edit, refine, error-check, or otherwise improve it (text or images), it counts as AI-assisted and not AI-generated.
KDP gives a second example. If you used an AI-based tool to brainstorm and generate ideas, but ultimately created the text or images yourself, that is also AI-assisted. KDP adds: "It is not necessary to inform us of the use of such tools or processes."
AI-assisted vs AI-generated: a quick comparison
| AI-generated | AI-assisted | |
|---|---|---|
| Who created the content? | An AI-based tool | You |
| What the AI did | Created the text, images, or translations | Edited, refined, error-checked, or helped brainstorm |
| Do you disclose it to KDP? | Yes | No |
| Does heavy editing change it? | No, it stays AI-generated | Not applicable |
What does AI-generated include besides text?
Images and translations count too. The rule covers text, images, and translations. That means an AI-created cover, interior image, or artwork is AI-generated content. So is a translation that an AI tool created.
What are you still responsible for?
Checking all your content, either way. KDP says you are responsible for verifying that all AI-generated and AI-assisted content follows all of its content guidelines, including all applicable intellectual property rights. Disclosing AI-generated content does not make a book compliant on its own.

Is Golden Bestseller Empire AI-assisted or AI-generated?
Golden Bestseller Empire is built for AI-assisted publishing. You write your book. The AI helps you plan it, coach you, edit it, proofread it, and promote it. An AI writing coach is there if you want ideas and feedback, and if you ask it to draft a section, it writes in your own voice from your own details, and you adjust it. That is your choice, and KDP's rule on what to disclose still applies to you.
The one place to take care is translation: KDP counts a translation an AI tool created as AI-generated, so if you publish a translated edition made with the Translation App, you disclose it when you publish. The book itself is still yours, and a translation is a way to spread your message further.
What this means for you

- Heavy editing does not turn AI-generated content into AI-assisted content.
- Translations and images count too.
- You are responsible for checking all of your content against KDP's guidelines.
