KDP Previewer Stuck or Very Slow After Your PDF Upload

KDP's Previewer can take 15 to 45 minutes or more. Wait, then try a new filename, a different browser or a private window.

A slow or looping KDP Previewer is an Amazon-side processing step, not a sign that your exported file is broken. Keep waiting, then try a new filename, then a different browser. There is nothing to fix or redo in the Writing Studio.

What does the Previewer do?

After you upload your print PDF on KDP's own print setup page and click Launch Previewer, KDP shows a loading screen while it processes the manuscript and cover into a print-ready file. You may see messages such as "Checking your trim size…", "Checking your cover for quality issues…", "Checking for blank pages…" and "…Or make a sandwich…".

This happens on Amazon's own site, not in the Writing Studio.

How long can it take?

This can genuinely take a long time: sometimes 15 to 20 minutes, occasionally 30 to 45 minutes or more, and it can visibly cycle back through the same set of messages more than once. This is a known, documented issue reported by many other KDP authors on Amazon's own community forums. It is not unique to you, and it is not a sign that your exported file is broken.

What should I check first?

Confirm that your file looked correct in the Writing Studio's Page Preview and Full Screen. If the content looked right there, the file is fine. This is Amazon's backend being slow, not a content problem. Page Preview is built by the same print engine and the same request as the real PDF export. See How do Page Preview and Full Screen work?

What can I try, in order?

Go from least to most disruptive.

  1. Just keep waiting.
  2. Cancel and re-upload the exact same file under a new, different filename, then re-launch the Previewer. Amazon's Previewer can get stuck on a specific uploaded file instance, and a fresh upload of identical content can process normally. Multiple KDP authors report this fix.
  3. Try a different browser, or a private (incognito) window. KDP authors also report this fix.
  4. Check for the two file-level causes other authors have hit: an unexpected blank page (before or after a chapter opening) or a low-resolution image.

There is nothing to fix or redo in the Writing Studio itself for this. It is entirely an Amazon-side processing step.

Is a blank page before a chapter a problem?

Every chapter (and the intro sections before Chapter 1) always starts on a right-hand page, per standard publishing convention. If that would otherwise land it on a left-hand page, a blank page is automatically inserted before it. This is expected, correct behavior, not an error. See Why is there a blank page before my chapter?

Does the PDF size matter?

The Export window reminds you: "KDP requires your PDF's page size to exactly match the trim size you select on their end." See How do I export an ePub or a PDF in the right size?
