Use H3 and H4 for sub-headings inside your text. H1 and H2 are made for you automatically from your chapter title and your section titles, so you never need to touch them.

Why does the dropdown only show H3 and H4?

Real heading structure matters for EPUB. Amazon's own accessibility guidance wants a genuine, non-skipping hierarchy, H1, then H2, then H3, and so on, not just bold text styled to look like a heading.

H1 and H2 are already taken automatically:

You never have to touch either. H3 and H4 are the two real, working levels for any sub-heading typed inside the body text itself.

How do I add a sub-heading?

  1. Click on the line you want to be a sub-heading.
  2. Open the narrow Paragraph style dropdown at the left of the toolbar. ¶ is normal text.
  3. Choose H3 or H4.

This styles a line within the body text. It is separate from the chapter or section's own title field, which is what still generates the real chapter heading.

What is the difference between H3 and H4?

Both are bold. H4 is also italic and a touch larger than body text, so the two stay visually distinct while H4 still reads as a real heading, not a thin afterthought.

What about the quote style in the dropdown?

The dropdown also has a blockquote choice (❝). That is a real styled quote. It is different from a sub-heading, and different from the Indent and Outdent buttons, which shift a paragraph right or back as a plain visual shift.

Why were H1 and H2 removed from the dropdown?

H1 and H2 used to also be selectable here. Picking them inside body text silently broke exports. H1 was deleted outright in EPUB to avoid a duplicate, and H2 was invisible in PDF and downgraded to H3 in EPUB. They were removed for exactly that reason.

Do I need to rename my chapter headings?

No. The small "Chapter N · Title" heading shown above each chapter's content is editable. Click it and type whatever heading text you want. It stays exactly as typed. See How do I add chapters and sections?.
