Amazon: 720 billion+ pages read in 2025, three years of double-digit growth

Amazon just refreshed its Kindle lineup, and for authors the headline isn't the hardware. It's the readers.
On October 1, Amazon announced a redesigned base Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, and Kindle Colorsoft, plus a new page-turn remote. I'm sticking to what Amazon says in its own announcement, so you can see what the new Kindle lineup means for the people who read your books.
What did Amazon announce for the new Kindle lineup (the official version)?
Short answer: Three redesigned Kindles with a flush-front display, edge-to-edge color across the family, and a $34.99 Bluetooth remote for page turning.
According to Amazon's announcement, the new Kindle lineup looks like this:
| Model | Starting price | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| Kindle (6-inch, 16GB) | $149.99 | Available starting October 1 |
| Kindle with aluminum back (32GB) | $189.99 | Available starting October 1 |
| Kindle Paperwhite | $199.99 | Preorder, rolling basis |
| Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition (32GB) | $249.99 | Preorder, rolling basis |
| Kindle Colorsoft | $289.99 | Preorder, rolling basis |
| Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition (32GB) | $319.99 | Preorder, rolling basis |
Amazon says the new Kindle display has a "flush-front" design with no raised border, and that the whole family has edge-to-edge color. The Kindle Click remote costs $34.99 and works with every new Kindle and any Kindle model from 2024 or later.
Trade coverage puts the Paperwhite and Colorsoft ship date at October 28. Amazon's own page only says "preorder on a rolling basis," so treat October 28 as reported, not official.
Why does the new Kindle lineup matter to authors?
Short answer: Readers are growing in number, and Amazon says so itself.
Amazon's announcement says Kindle has seen "double-digit growth globally for three consecutive years with more than 720 billion pages read in 2025 alone." That's Amazon's own claim, and it's a company number, not an independent one.
Pages read is also the measure KDP Select pays on through Kindle Unlimited. A bigger, more engaged Kindle audience is good news for anyone who publishes ebooks,.

What should you check on your own books?
Short answer: Preview your ebook the way readers will see it, and don't change anything just because a new device exists.
I found no announcement of changes to KDP's file requirements with the new Kindle lineup, and nothing says your existing ebooks need to be updated. Still, a new device is a good moment for a quick check:
- Preview your ebook. Open it in KDP's preview tools and page through a few chapters, the front matter, and any images.
- Look at your cover. Edge-to-edge color is now part of the Kindle story, so make sure your cover and any color images still look clean on a color screen.
- Check your tables and images. Anything wide can behave differently on different screens.
- Leave edits for a real reason. Updating a title you've already submitted doesn't count against KDP's weekly limit, but there's no need to republish without a reason.
If you haven't published an ebook yet, my guide on how to publish on KDP walks through the preview step, and my Amazon KDP publishing guide covers the whole process.
Still unknown (and worth watching)
- Whether Amazon will make the October 28 date for the Paperwhite and Colorsoft official on its own pages.
- How much of the new Kindle lineup's growth comes from first-time buyers. Amazon's announcement doesn't say.
- Whether KDP will change its Kindle preview or file guidance for the new devices. Nothing has been announced.
I keep every change I can verify in one place: the latest Amazon KDP updates.
A quick note from someone who's been doing this a while
I've published for 10 years, I've only ever sold on KDP, and I've sold over 350,000 books, and my rule hasn't changed: write for the reader, not the device. A new Kindle means more readers on the platform, and that's good news for every author who's already published there.
If you only do one thing after reading this: open your ebook in the preview tool today and look at it the way a reader would.
