Unable to Type After Running Proofread

Proofread results make the text read-only on purpose. Click Done in the proofread banner to return to normal editing.

While Proofread results are showing, your text is read-only on purpose. Click Done in the proofread banner (or fix every flagged error) and you can type again. This is expected, not a bug.

Why does the text stop responding?

Proofread is the spell check and grammar check. When you click ✓ Proofread, the app does AI-powered line-by-line proofreading of the current section: it finds spelling mistakes, punctuation errors, double spaces, capitalization issues and grammar problems, and highlights each one directly in the text. To let you click the highlighted errors, the text area switches to a read-only view. That is why the cursor will not blink and typing does nothing.

How do I type again?

1. 1Look for the proofread banner.
2. 2Click Done in that banner.
3. 3Your text returns to the normal editable view.

Fixing every flagged error also returns the text to the normal editable view.

What can I do while the results are showing?

• ✦Click a highlighted word to see the fix and a description.
• ✦Click any individual underlined word for a Fix it or Leave choice. Fix it accepts that suggestion. Leave skips it.
• ✦Click Fix All to accept everything at once.

Fix it and Fix All keep your bold and italic in place. If a suggestion looks wrong, Leave skips it. If a suggestion about a very short phrase points at the wrong spot, only its first match is ever changed.

How does Proofread read my text?

Proofread reads the section exactly as you see it, so bold, italic and links do not create fake spaces. It only shows suggestions that actually change something and can be found in the text. The ✓ Proofread button is at the top right of the editor, in the Visual Editor.

What if I still cannot type after clicking Done?

• ✦Check you are in the Visual Editor and not in Page Preview. Visual Editor is where you write and format your text. Page Preview shows how the finished page will look in the printed book.
• ✦Check whether you just came back from another page. For a moment after returning, the text cannot be edited while the newest saved copy loads. See Why can't I type for a moment after I return to the Writing Studio?
• ✦Check the bottom bar for a "Not saved — retry" message. See Why does it say "Not saved — retry"?
