How to Fix Common Writing Studio Problems: A Troubleshooting Tutorial
Step-by-step answers for the seven problems authors meet most: not saved, can't type, missing content, a stuck preview, a missing prompt and a word target of zero.
Something not behaving? Take a breath, because nearly everything here has a simple fix, and your work is safe. This tutorial walks you through the seven things authors ask about most, one at a time.

Step 1: When It Says "Not Saved, Retry"
"Not saved — retry" means the latest save to the app's database didn't go through. Keep the page open, copy any unsaved text somewhere safe, and use the retry. Wait for "✓ All changes saved" before you switch pages or reload.
What Do the Save Messages Mean?
Everything you type saves by itself into the app's own database, tied to your account. The bottom bar shows:
- Auto-saved and Saving… mean your change is being saved.
- ✓ All changes saved means it's done.
- Not saved — retry means a save didn't go through.
If the Writing Studio tells you about an unsaved change, keep the page or book open and use Retry save.
What Should You Do?
- Keep the page open.
- Copy any unsaved text somewhere safe.
- Use the retry. That's "Not saved — retry" or Retry save.
- Wait for "✓ All changes saved" before you switch or reload.
What If It Says You've Been Logged Out?
The message says: "You've been logged out. Sign in again in a new tab — your text stays on this page and saves as soon as you are back." Click Sign in (new tab).
What If It Says the Book Changed in Another Session?
You may see this when the same book is open on two devices. Keep the page open, copy any unsaved text, and reload before you edit.
Does Connecting Google Drive or Dropbox Change This?
No. Everything you type saves to the app's own database, whether or not you connected Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or a folder on your computer. Your own storage only keeps an extra backup copy, made in the background and whenever you click Save to Your Cloud. See Is My Book Safe?
What About the Book Planner Blueprint?
If a finished Blueprint didn't save, use the save-retry button you see. It keeps your finished draft and doesn't run the AI again, so please don't regenerate it.
What If Retry Keeps Failing?
Keep the page open, and keep your copied text safe. Then see How to Contact Support.
Not sure where to start? The Course Coach inside the app guides you through every step, so you're never stuck on a button.
Step 2: When You Can't Type After Returning
Don't worry, this is normal! When you come back to the Writing Studio from another page, like the Dashboard, your book shows up right away. For a moment you can't type, while your newest saved copy loads and takes its place. Then typing works as usual.
Why Does This Happen?
You see your book right away, and then the newest saved copy loads and replaces it. While that happens, the text can't be edited. When it's done, you can type again.
What Should You Do?
Wait a moment, click into the text, and start typing.
What If You Still Can't Type?
Check these:
- Look at the bottom bar. If it says "Not saved — retry," use the retry. See What "Not Saved, Retry" Means.
- Reload the page. A refresh always does a normal full load.
- Look for Proofread results. While they're showing, your text is read-only until you click Done in the banner. See Unable to Type After Running Proofread.
Is Your Work Saved?
Yes. Everything you type saves by itself into the app's own database, tied to your account, about half a second after you stop typing. The bottom bar says "Saving…" and then "✓ All changes saved." Wait for that before you switch pages or reload. See Is My Book Safe?
Why Does It Open on a Different Chapter?
The app remembers the chapter and section you worked on last, and reopens there. If it lands somewhere you didn't expect, send us a screenshot. See How to Contact Support.
Does the Preview Wait When You Return?
Previews you already saw come back right away when you return to the same chapter, format and template. Switching between two formats and back doesn't rebuild them. That lasts until you reload the page. The first preview of a chapter, format or template is the slowest, most of all right after an app update or a long break.
Not sure where to start? The Course Coach inside the app guides you through every step, so you're never stuck on a button.
Step 3: When You Can't Type After Proofread
While your Proofread results are showing, your text is read-only on purpose. Click Done in the proofread banner, or fix every flagged mistake, and you can type again. Nothing is broken!
Why Does the Text Stop Responding?
Proofread is your spelling and grammar check. When you click ✓ Proofread, the app reads your current section line by line. It finds spelling mistakes, punctuation errors, double spaces, capital letters and grammar problems, and highlights each one in your text. So that you can click the highlights, the text area becomes read-only. That's why the cursor doesn't blink and typing does nothing.
A banner says "X errors found" or "No errors found" while this view is open.
How Do You Type Again?
- Find the proofread banner.
- Click Done.
- Your text goes back to normal.
Fixing every flagged mistake also gets you back to normal.
What Can You Do While the Results Are Showing?
- Click a highlighted word to see the fix and why.
- Click an underlined word to choose Fix it or Leave. Fix it accepts the suggestion, and Leave skips it.
- Click Fix All to accept everything at once.
Fix it and Fix All keep your bold and italic. If a suggestion looks wrong, click Leave. If a suggestion is about a very short phrase that appears more than once, only the first match changes.
How Does Proofread Read Your Text?
It reads your section exactly as you see it, so bold, italic and links don't create fake spaces. It only shows suggestions that really change something and can be found in your text. The ✓ Proofread button is at the top right of the Visual Editor.
What If You Still Can't Type After Clicking Done?
- Check that you're in the Visual Editor and not in Page Preview. The Visual Editor is where you write. Page Preview shows how the printed page will look.
- Did you just come back from another page? Wait a moment. See Unable to Type for a Moment After Returning.
- Look at the bottom bar for "Not saved — retry." See What "Not Saved, Retry" Means.

Step 4: When Your Content Seems to Disappear
Take a breath. First, check that you're in the right book, chapter and section. If your content is really gone, every save is kept for good, so your work is very likely still there. Contact support, and please don't keep trying things or assume it's lost.
What Should You Check First?
- Click the Refresh button in the bottom bar.
- Check your book. Click the book name at the top of the Chapters panel, and make sure you're in the right manuscript. You can also click the My Books tab to see all your books.
- Check your section. Click the section name in the chapter list on the left.
- Check for a second book. Every import makes a separate book, so an import never changes a book you already have. A title, a date or an entry in the list doesn't prove that everything was imported, or that two books are copies of each other. Open each one and compare the chapter list and the text.
Is Your Work Really Safe?
Yes. Everything you type saves by itself into the app's own database, tied to your account. Every save is also kept in the background as a permanent snapshot, so a mistake is never final. See Is My Book Safe?
Can You Restore an Older Version Yourself?
Not yet. There isn't a button in the app for that. If you need an earlier version back, email contact@goldenbestseller.com and tell us about when your content was right. We can find it in the saved history and put it back for you.
What Should You Avoid?
Please don't delete or merge any books until you've opened each one and checked what's inside. Keep every copy until you know what's in it and you have a backup. Don't decide which copy is the real one from the date alone.
What If You Just Imported a Book?
An import only worked if the save was confirmed. Saw an error or missing content? Keep your original Word or ePub file, write down the exact message, and check the right book in My Books before you import again. Follow any sign-in or cloud-connection prompt. Then email contact@goldenbestseller.com with the message you saw, and a screenshot if you like. Never send secret keys.
Could It Be a Save Problem?
If the bottom bar says "Not saved — retry," keep the page open, copy your unsaved text somewhere safe, and use the retry. See What "Not Saved, Retry" Means.
Not sure where to start? The Course Coach inside the app guides you through every step, so you're never stuck on a button.
Step 5: When Page Preview Is Slow
Page Preview builds a real PDF on our server, the same way your final export is built, and then shows it on your screen. The first preview of a chapter, format or template is the slowest, most of all right after an app update or a long break. A little patience, and it appears!
What Is Page Preview Showing You?
The real print-ready PDF page for your current chapter, not an approximation. It's built by the same print engine, with the same request, as your PDF export. The whole book is laid out, and the preview opens at the chapter you're editing. So your margins, running headers, fonts and page breaks are exactly what will print.
What Is Normal?
- The first preview of a chapter, format or template is the slowest. You notice it most right after an update, or after the app hasn't been used for a while.
- After you type, the preview refreshes a moment after you stop.
- Previews you already saw come back right away when you return to the same chapter, format and template. Switching between two formats and back doesn't rebuild them. That lasts until you reload the page.
- The Front End tab builds its thumbnails from a full-book preview the first time you open it. It doesn't rebuild them when you leave and come back, unless your book changed.
- Preview page numbers are lower than the PDF's. While you're still writing, the preview leaves out only the front matter (title page, copyright, table of contents). So its page numbers are lower by the number of front pages. The front matter is in your real PDF.
- The preview uses lighter copies of your pictures, at the same size and position, to be quicker. Export PDF always uses the full-quality pictures.
What If the Preview Doesn't Appear?
Send us a screenshot. Tell us which page you're on and which browser you use. See How to Contact Support.
Is This the Same as KDP's Previewer Being Slow?
No. That's Amazon's own screen, after you upload your PDF to KDP, and it's Amazon's processing. See My Print PDF Is Stuck in the KDP Previewer.

Step 6: When the Writer's Prompt Is Missing
Click Show prompt at the top right of the editor. Don't see one? Then the Chapter Detail Generator (Step 3 · BUILD) hasn't been run for that section yet.
What Is the Writer's Prompt?
It's the guidance for one specific section, and it comes from the Chapter Detail Generator (Step 3 · BUILD). In Step 4 · WRITE, your roadmap calls it the Writing Prompt: "Guidance inside each section." The line in italics after "The Goal:" tells you what that section is meant to do.
Why Can't You See It?
Two reasons:
- You hid it. Hide prompt is remembered for each book. Once you hide it, it stays hidden for that book until you click Show prompt. That's normal.
- There's no prompt yet. If you haven't run the Chapter Detail Generator for that section, there's nothing to show.
How Do You Show It Again?
- Open the Writing Studio tab, and select your section.
- Click Show prompt at the top right of the editor.
How Do You Create the Prompt?
- Run the Chapter Detail Generator (Step 3 · BUILD). Keep the page open while it works.
- Bring the outline into the Writing Studio, in one of two ways:
- - Click through straight from the Chapter Detail Generator after it finishes. That puts the new outline in right away and asks for a working title.
- - In My Books, click + Pull Latest Outline. If you have more than one project, a list opens so you pick the project. If your current book has no outline yet, use Pull latest outline in the Chapters panel. Paste outline lets you paste one in yourself.
- Go back to your section. The prompt is there.
A book with more than 30 chapters is built in parts of about 12 chapters each. If one part doesn't finish, the finished parts are kept, and clicking Generate again carries on from the part that stopped.
Can You Get More Room on a Phone?
Yes. Hide prompt clears the prompt panel and gives you more space. Bring it back any time with Show prompt.
Does the Prompt Write Your Chapter?
No. In Step 4 · WRITE, the Writing Prompt is "Guidance inside each section," and Your Draft is "Write, dictate, or get AI help." The Chapter Detail Generator gives you directions for writing. It doesn't draft stories, scenes, dialogue or text for you. You bring the book, and your Writing Team helps with the heavy lifting.

Step 7: When Your Word Target Says 0
Your word target comes from the Chapter Detail Generator (Step 3 · BUILD). If you haven't run it for that section yet, there's no target. Run it, come back, and the target fills in by itself.
Where Do You See the Word Count?
In the bottom bar of the writing area. It reads "X / Y words." Y is your section's word target. When a target is set, a progress bar and a percentage show too. Click the target number to change it.
Why Does the Target Say 0?
You haven't run the Chapter Detail Generator for this section yet, so no target is set. Without a target, the bar counts from zero.
How Do You Get a Target?
- Run the Chapter Detail Generator (Step 3 · BUILD). Keep the page open while it works.
- Bring the outline into your book. In My Books, click + Pull Latest Outline. If your current book has no outline yet, use Pull latest outline in the Chapters panel.
- Go back to your section. The target fills in by itself.
Does Every Section Have Its Own?
Yes. Each section shows its own count in the bottom bar.
Can You Change the Target Yourself?
Yes. Click the target number in the bottom bar.
What About on a Phone?
On a phone, the word count sits right under the autosave message. See Can I Use the App on a Phone or Tablet?
