How the Writing Studio Prepares Your Pictures for Print
You never need to compress, convert or enlarge anything. The studio does it for you, and your pictures look the same in the book and the print PDF.
You do not need to compress, convert or enlarge your pictures. The Writing Studio prepares them for you, and your saved book and print PDF keep the full-quality pictures.

What file types and sizes can I add?
The picture button accepts any PNG or JPG at any size, and there is no size-limit message. A picture is never refused for being large, and saving never fails because of size. A very large section is sent in pieces automatically.
What does the studio do to my picture?
It prepares every picture automatically. You do not have to compress, convert or upscale anything:
- A picture that is too small for print is enlarged automatically to print width, about 300 DPI at the page width.
- A huge picture is reduced to a size print never needs.
- Photos are saved as high-quality JPEG.
- Screenshots, diagrams and pictures with see-through areas stay PNG, so text and edges stay sharp.
- PNG pictures are repacked automatically in a way that keeps every pixel exactly the same, so a picture never looks different.
There is no separate Upscale step any more. Pictures already in the book that are print-sized need nothing re-done.
What happens to my pictures in the ePub?
When you export an ePub, the app makes smaller copies of your pictures just for that file, so the Kindle file stays small. Amazon KDP does not allow 99-cent pricing for a file over 3 MB.
Your saved book and your print PDF are not affected. They keep the full-quality pictures. If you worry about picture quality, the book and the PDF are not affected. We cannot promise an exact file size.
Why does Page Preview look a little lighter?
For speed, Page Preview uses lighter copies of your pictures, in the same size and position. Export PDF always uses the full-quality pictures.
What about pictures from a Word or ePub file I import?
Real embedded images are pulled directly from the file when you import. They are automatically upscaled if they are below Amazon's print-quality threshold, so you do not need to separately re-insert them. They clear KDP's "Low-Quality Image" check without any manual re-processing. See How do I import a Word or ePub file?.
What does Amazon say about pictures?
