KDP 18-Month Pre-Orders For Authors (September 2, 2026)
KDP raised the Kindle pre-order cap from 12 to 18 months on September 2, 2026 — the creation-date split, the new postpone math, and when a long pre-order actually helps.

KDP just gave Kindle pre-orders an 18-month runway.
After sitting with the live Help pages the next morning, the useful part is not the extra six months. It is the creation-date split, the new postpone math, and the fact that the old one-year ban is now a courtesy plus six months.
This is the catalog view of that change — after a decade on the same Bookshelf, and after building Golden Bestseller Empire so I would stop stitching ten tools together every time Amazon moved a date.
Why the September 2 update matters
Twelve months was the cap. One postpone. Miss the file deadline and you could lose pre-orders for a year. That ceiling just moved.
The first reason it matters is calendar. New pre-orders created on or after September 2, 2026 can sit up to 18 months out. That is the first time a KDP ebook listing can look like a trade publisher's list.
The second reason is forgiveness. The first missed deadline or cancel is now a courtesy. The second costs six months, not twelve, and then the privilege comes back on its own.
The third reason is that almost none of the old constraints moved. eBooks only. Ten live pre-orders. Final file still due more than 72 hours before release. Amazon did not make pre-order casual. They made the landing less fatal.
The store-window analogy that makes it click
The page is the glass. The pre-order button is the coming-soon card. Look Inside is whatever is sitting in the window right now — including a draft you hoped nobody would read. The 72-hour line is the night the glass locks.
Eighteen months is a very large window. That does not mean you should fill it with an empty room.
What actually changed on September 2, 2026
KDP Community posted "Set up pre-orders up to 18 months in advance" on September 2, 2026. Help topic G201499380 now splits the cap by creation date.
Created on or after September 2, 2026: 18 months. Created before that date: still 12 months. An August listing does not inherit 18 months.
| Rule | Created before Sep 2 | Created on or after Sep 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum release date | 12 months | 18 months |
| Free postponements | 1 | Up to 2 |
| How far you may postpone | 30 days past the current date | Within 6 months of the original date |
| First miss or cancel | Often a 1-year ban | Courtesy. Privileges stay |
| Second miss or cancel | 1-year ban | 6 months, then auto-restored |
| Ban already running | 1 year | Still the original 1 year |

What did not change
Pre-order is still Kindle ebook only. KDP will not take a paperback or hardcover pre-order. You can schedule a print release so the page stays dark until that morning. New titles only. Public-domain ebooks are blocked. Ten active pre-orders at a time.
The final manuscript is still due more than 72 hours before release. Pre-order units still contribute to sales rank before launch. KDP Select's 90 days still start on release day, not listing day. KDP Terms still say "up to 365 days" in one older clause. The Bookshelf follows Help.
When a long pre-order actually earns its place
The rule is one day old. Anyone waving results this week is guessing.
The first job is series infrastructure. Book 4 can have a live Amazon URL while Book 3 is launching.
The second job is a date already owed to someone. A talk. A course module. A launch week other people have already printed.
The third job is rank that drips. Amazon counts a pre-order on the day it is placed, not as a pile on release morning. That is why a long quiet KDP pre-order can look flat on launch morning even when units already came in.
None of those three require 18 months. They require a date that can be kept and a file submitted early.
👑 Keeping Amazon's rule changes straight — and the manuscript that has to beat them — is exactly why I built Golden Bestseller Empire. Writing, team, ads, translation, and launch calendar in one studio instead of ten half-working tools. → See how it works
KDP pre-order vs scheduled print
| Kindle pre-order | KDP print schedule | |
|---|---|---|
| Collects orders in advance | Yes | No |
| Page live before the date | Yes | No |
| Formats | eBook only | Paperback / hardcover |
| Rank before launch | Yes, when placed | No pre-order units |
If a paperback is already for sale while KDP still says scheduled, look outside KDP. Ingram is the usual suspect. For a clean same-day launch the calendar still has three buttons: Kindle pre-order, KDP print scheduled release, and any other distributor.
How postponing works now
Created before September 2, 2026: one free postpone, up to 30 days past the current date. Created on or after: up to two free postpones, within six months of the original date.
Path in Bookshelf: three dots beside the title, Edit eBook Pricing, new date, Publish. Buyers get an email. After a cancel you generally cannot reuse that ASIN.
The 72-hour wall has not moved
The final manuscript must be submitted more than 72 hours before release. Miss that window and the pre-order can vanish. Whatever file is sitting in the listing can become Look Inside. A placeholder draft is not private.
That is also why the writing app and publishing team inside Golden Bestseller Empire exist — so the 72-hour line is boring, not a panic.
Money, Select, and reports
Amazon's pre-order price guarantee can charge earlier buyers the lowest price offered through release day. Royalty follows the price charged. Pre-order royalties pay about 60 days after the month the book releases.
A title that sits on pre-order for 14 months and then enters Select has not spent those 14 months inside Kindle Unlimited. Pre-order collects paid units and rank. KU collects page reads after launch. They are not the same clock.
The mistakes that keep showing up
Listing a book that is not a book yet. Treating the 72-hour line like a soft target. Uploading a draft just for the sample. Killing a listing to reset the date and losing the ASIN. Assuming 18 months will invent an audience for book one.
When the 18-month cap is the right call
Series. Readers who already click Pre-order. A date already owed. A file that will be weeks early.
When the 18-month cap is the wrong call
Book one with no list. Unfinished manuscript. Mostly Kindle Unlimited. Picking 18 months because the slider goes that far. Eighteen months does not invent demand. It only lengthens a promise.

A short history so the number means something
In September 2019, KDP moved pre-order from a short window to one year. Seven years later they moved the cap to 18 months and rebuilt postpone plus penalty around a creation date. Amazon will give you a public page early if you will not strand the reader. Lengthening the calendar does not loosen the last three days.
