KDP's 70% Royalty Band Just Expanded to $12.99 — Don't Assume You're Already On It
Amazon raised the 70% ebook royalty ceiling for the first time since 2007. Here's what actually changed, the real box-set math at $10.99–$12.99, and when staying at $9.99 still wins.

Effective Date
July 7, 2026
New 70% Range
$2.99 – $12.99 (was $2.99 – $9.99)

Amazon does not automatically switch your existing titles

Alrighty, let's talk. For almost twenty years the top of the 70% royalty band sat locked at $9.99 like it was carved in stone. On July 7, 2026 Amazon finally moved it to $12.99 (and made matching changes in the other marketplaces).
Yes, you read that right. First change since 2007. I'm not saying we should throw a parade, but if you've ever gritted your teeth pricing a longer nonfiction book or a box set, this one might actually make you smile.
I'm keeping this clean, source-checked, and short enough that you can decide in five minutes whether you need to do anything. No 3,000-word essays required.
What actually changed (the official version)
Effective date: July 7, 2026
The good news:
- The 70% royalty option on Amazon.com is now $2.99 – $12.99 (it used to stop at $9.99).
- Same idea across the other KDP marketplaces — they all got equivalent bumps.
What stayed the same (because of course it did):
- Delivery costs still come out of the 70% royalty. (Still one of the few major retailers that does this.)
- The 35% option is still there if you ever need it.
- Virtual-voice audiobook pricing didn't move.
- Linked translations usually inherit the change automatically.
The sneaky part most people miss: Amazon does not automatically flip existing titles that were priced between $10 and $12.99 onto the 70% plan. You still have to go in and switch it yourself. I've watched too many authors leave actual money on the table because of this little detail.
Primary sources I double-checked:

- KDP Help → eBook List Price Requirements (updated FAQ section)
The money math (no sugar-coating)
Here's roughly what a typical ~2 MB nonfiction ebook earns after the delivery fee under the 70% plan:
| List Price | Old 35% Royalty | New 70% Royalty | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| $9.99 | $6.78 | $6.78 | none |
| $10.99 | $3.85 | ~$7.48 | +94% |
| $11.99 | $4.20 | ~$8.18 | +95% |
| $12.99 | $4.55 | ~$8.88 | +95% |
| $13.99+ | 35% | still 35% | none |
(Your exact number depends on file size — always glance at the live estimate inside KDP before you hit publish.)
Jumping from $9.99 to $12.99 at 70% is roughly a 30% raise on the same sale. Not life-changing for every book, but if the title already sells steadily? That's real money you were previously leaving with Amazon.

Who should actually care (and who can keep sipping coffee)
This is meaningful for you if:
- You write longer nonfiction and always felt a bit squeezed at $9.99
- You publish specialized guides, workbooks, or premium how-to books
- You have box sets or multi-book collections that want a higher price tag
- Any of your titles are already sitting between $10 and $12.99 on the 35% plan (hello, free money)
You can mostly ignore it if:
- Your fiction lives happily in the $2.99–$7.99 range
- Most of your income comes from Kindle Unlimited page reads (list price matters less)
- The book is brand new and you still have zero sales data (test first, raise later)
Even the Authors Guild cheered this one — they'd been telling Amazon for years that the old $9.99 ceiling was especially rough on longer, more specialized work. Nice to see them get a win.
Your simple to-do list (no drama required)
Open KDP and do this. It takes longer to read the list than to actually do it:
- Look at every ebook currently priced between $10.00 and $12.99.
- Click into Kindle eBook Pricing.
- Make sure the price is still inside the new $2.99–$12.99 window.
- Switch the royalty option to 70% if it's still on 35%.
- Save and republish (usually live within 72 hours).
- Peek at the live royalty estimate so you see the real number after delivery fees.
- Do a quick pass on your major international marketplaces too.
You do not have to raise any prices. Amazon is clear: nothing is required. This is purely optional extra room if you want it. (Refreshingly low-pressure for once.)
If you do decide to test a higher price, go gently. Check your review count and conversion first. A lot of authors try $10.99 or $11.99 before jumping all the way to $12.99. No need to scare the algorithm (or your readers) on day one.

How this fits with the rest of the 2026 KDP circus
This royalty change is just one piece of a busy year. Here's the short list of other things authors are still adjusting to:
- AI disclosure is required at upload now (text, images, or translations). Yes, really.
- DRM-free titles published after the late-2025 cutoff can offer EPUB/PDF downloads.
- Older pre-2012 Kindles lost store support in May 2026. (RIP, ancient devices.)
- Payment Service Provider / KYC rules tightened — possible holds after August 1 if you're not compliant.
- Print costs and paper options shifted earlier in the year.
- Kindle Translate keeps adding language pairs.
I'm keeping a living changelog of all of these in one place so none of us have to play detective through scattered Community posts.
Still unknown (and worth a raised eyebrow)
- Will Amazon eventually raise the ceiling even higher? (The Authors Guild is still asking. Fingers crossed.)
- How will conversion rates settle at the new $10.99–$12.99 price points in different niches?
- How strict will AI disclosure enforcement become?
- Any future tweaks to those delivery fees? (A girl can dream.)
I'll update this the moment anything new drops.
A quick note from someone who's been doing this a while
After more than a decade of publishing and walking thousands of authors through the process, the pricing mistakes I still see most often are surprisingly simple (and a little heartbreaking):
- Leaving money on the table because the old $9.99 ceiling felt permanent.
- Raising the price without enough reviews or a clear reason the higher price makes sense.
- Forgetting to switch the royalty option after a price change. (The classic.)
Inside Golden Bestseller Empire we already treat $12.99 as the practical ceiling for premium nonfiction and keep the pricing tools and Amazon Ads calculators current with whatever KDP is doing this month. The goal isn't to chase every little Amazon tweak — it's to have a system that quietly absorbs the important ones so you can keep writing (and maybe even enjoy the process).
Want the whole process around pricing and launch? See my Amazon KDP publishing guide, and for the platform basics, what is Amazon KDP.
If you only do one thing after reading this: open your Bookshelf, find any title sitting between $10 and $12.99, and make sure it's actually on the 70% plan. That five-minute check is the highest-ROI move available right now. You're welcome.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the new KDP 70% royalty price band?
As of July 7, 2026, the 70% royalty option on Amazon.com covers $2.99–$12.99 — up from the old $9.99 ceiling. This is the first change to that band since 2007.
Does Amazon automatically switch my existing books to the new rate?
No. Amazon does not automatically flip existing titles priced between $10 and $12.99 onto the 70% plan — you have to go into Rights & Pricing and switch it yourself.
Do I have to raise my prices to take advantage of this?
No. Amazon is clear that nothing is required — this is purely optional extra pricing room if you want it, not a mandatory change.
What happens if I price my ebook above $12.99?
You drop back down to the 35% royalty rate. The 70% option only applies within the $2.99–$12.99 window.
Do delivery fees still come out of the 70% royalty?
Yes — that part is unchanged. Delivery costs still apply on top of the royalty math, exactly as before.
