Step 1 · FIND: Find Your Signature Topic

Discover what you could be known for. Five research generators show you what readers want, what they will pay for and where your angle is still open.

Step 1 · FIND asks a single question: what could you be known for? It helps you find the intersection of what you know, what readers want, and an angle that is yours to own, so that you begin your book with a validated Signature Topic and not a hopeful guess.

The Step 1 · FIND Roadmap page in Golden Bestseller Empire.

What Step 1 Is

Perhaps you already know. You have a field of expertise, a proven method, or an idea you have spent years developing. Perfect. Or perhaps you know your broader field but have not yet found the distinctive angle for your book. That is what FIND is for.

The goal is not to chase trends. It is to find a distinctive territory within your expertise: something you can become known for, that readers are genuinely interested in now, and that gives you a clear reason to stand out. Your Signature Topic sits at the intersection of three things.

Think territory, not just one book. Your first book might introduce the bigger idea, and future books can go deeper into specific problems, methods or aspects, for the same audience. That creates natural read-through and helps reinforce the territory you are becoming known for.

Why You Begin Here

The most common mistake is to jump straight to the Book Planner. The right starting point is Step 1, even if you believe you already know your topic. Step 1 has generators that do something the Book Planner cannot do on its own: they show you, before you write a single word, what readers are begging for and have not found, whether people in your niche actually spend money, and whether anyone has just published your book.

The Hidden Gem Gold Mine, for example, scans the negative reviews of Amazon's top-selling books, and the comments on Reddit, to surface exactly what readers wish existed in your niche. The Viral Topic Gap Generator finds what is trending right now. Either can unlock a brand-new chapter idea, a better book angle, or even a different book altogether. Writing from what readers actually wish existed is always stronger than writing from what you think is interesting.

If you already know your topic, it is still worth running them. Generator 1 often surfaces a chapter angle or subtitle framing you had not considered. Generator 4 confirms that the niche is monetizable, which many students assume without checking. Generator 5 confirms that no one has just published the exact same book. The cost of skipping them is a book that competes against a title published two months ago.

The Four Questions Step 1 Answers

A topic can be passionate, popular and entirely non-monetizable. A topic can have wonderful action gaps and already have a book published last month. Step 1 runs four filters before any writing begins, and that protects months of work.

  1. What are readers begging for that no current book delivers? These are the Action Gaps.
  2. Is the niche monetizable? Do people actually spend money here?
  3. Are there viral cultural movements in this niche that have no book yet?
  4. Is your specific topic still an open gap right now, or has someone already written it?

The Five Generators, in Order

Run them in this order. Each one finds your gap from a different direction.

  1. Hidden Gem Gold Mine. Finds gaps from inside the existing book market.
  2. Alexa for Shopping Gap Finder. Finds gaps from the perspective of Amazon's AI recommendation engine.
  3. Viral Topic Gap Generator. Finds gaps in cultural movements not yet captured in books.
  4. Monetization Gap Generator. Confirms that the niche has proven buying behaviour.
  5. Final Validation Generator. Confirms that your specific angle is fresh and in demand.

Generators 1 to 4 work from your niche, mapping the broader landscape. Generator 5 works from your specific book topic, validating the precise angle.

Your Research Team is up to help you uncover gaps, emerging opportunities, reader interest and the strongest angle for your expertise. Between them they cover hidden opportunities, current reader interest, emerging topics, monetization potential and final validation.

How to Begin

On the Step 1 Roadmap page, the Start your research now → button leads into Step 1's generators. The first time, it opens the first Step 1 lesson, which is the intro video. If you have already been in Step 1, it takes you straight to the first Step 1 lesson that has a generator.

What You Leave Step 1 With

A student who runs all five generators in order arrives at the Book Planner with a confirmed topic that real readers want, a proven monetizable niche and a specific angle that is not already taken. They also carry three positioning phrases from the Alexa for Shopping Gap Finder, which feed directly into their title and description work in Step 6 · PREP, and a list of Substack partners for their Step 7 · LAUNCH outreach.

Common Questions

I already know my topic. Do I still need to run these? Yes, for the reasons above. Step 1 is the right place to begin even for authors who think they know exactly what they will write.

The generator gave me a topic I do not know anything about. The outputs are inspiration and research data, not instructions. You choose your topic. The gaps and angles are prompts to spark your thinking, and you should write only on a topic you genuinely know, have lived, or can research credibly. The generator finds the gap; you decide whether you can fill it.

The Viral Topic Gap Generator gave me ten movements and I cannot choose. Ask yourself two questions. Which movement makes you think, "Someone needs to write that, and I could be the one"? And which movement do you have the most to say about? The intersection of those two answers is the winner. If you are still stuck, the Hidden Gem Gold Mine and the Final Validation Generator will triangulate.

Final Validation said RECONSIDER. Do I have to start over? Not necessarily. RECONSIDER means that both demand and competition are challenging for the current angle, and the current angle is the key phrase. Go back to the Hidden Gem Gold Mine and read the Action Gaps again. One of them is likely still open. You may only need to shift your angle by a few degrees.

What is the difference between a niche and a specific book topic? A niche is the broad space, for example "stress management for working moms over 30". A specific book topic is the precise angle within it, for example "somatic nervous system regulation for working moms who cannot leave their desk at work".

What do the Substack newsletters have to do with my book? Two things. Paid newsletter offers in the Monetization Gap and Final Validation reports can suggest topics people value, but they do not prove paid subscriber numbers or demand for your particular book. And the writers of relevant newsletters, with their audiences, may be promotional partners at launch. When you are ready to promote in Step 7 · LAUNCH, they are the first people to contact for shoutouts and features. Save them now.

Can I run a generator again? Yes, whenever you want to explore another angle or revise your inputs. Results may overlap or repeat, and every new generation uses AI usage within your account's limits. When you only want to reread a report, reopen it from your saved results rather than generating again.

What Comes Next

Once you have a confirmed topic, the next step is the Book Planner, where your topic becomes a full book blueprint: structure, chapters, reader, transformation and every detail the downstream generators need. Do not skip from Step 1 straight to the generators. The Book Planner is the bridge. Continue with How to Finish Step 1 and Start the Book Planner.
