How to Back Up Your Book: Cloud Storage, Your Computer and Privacy
Connect Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or a folder on your computer, understand autosave and versions, and see where your book and your key are kept.
Your book is precious, so let's make sure it's safe! This tutorial shows you how your writing is saved, how to keep your own backup copy in the cloud or on your computer, and who can see what.

Step 1: See How Your Book Is Saved
Yes! Everything you type saves automatically to your account, shortly after you stop typing. You never need to click Save. On top of that, every save is kept as a permanent snapshot, and your own cloud storage holds an extra backup copy.
How Does Autosave Work?
Your text saves into the app's own database, tied to your account. Nothing is kept only in your browser. The bar along the bottom of the writing area shows Auto-saved, then Saving…, then ✓ All changes saved. Because your book is in your account, it's there when you come back, on any device. It works whether or not you connected Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or a folder on your computer.
What Is Save to Your Cloud?
It makes a backup copy of your whole book in your own storage: the Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or computer folder you connected. It's not our database. The same kind of backup is also made in the background. On a phone, the button shows as a cloud icon. See How to Connect Cloud Storage.
What Are Versions?
Every save is kept automatically as a permanent snapshot in the background, so a mistake or an accidental change is never lost for good.
How Do You Get an Earlier Version Back?
Email contact@goldenbestseller.com, and tell us about when your content was right. We can find it in that saved history and put it back for you. Please don't keep trying things, and don't assume it's gone.
How Do You Keep Your Own Copy?
Export, at the top right of the Writing Studio, downloads a real PDF or ePub to your computer any time. You get an ePub, plus PDF in six sizes: paperback 6×9, 5.5×8.5 and 5.25×8, workbook 8.5×11, and hardcover 5.5×8.5 and 6×9. Fix any "Not saved" message before you export, so your download is up to date.
What If You See "Not Saved"?
Keep the page open, copy any unsaved text somewhere safe, and use the retry. Wait for All changes saved before you switch pages or reload. If a message says the book changed in another session, because it's open on two devices, keep the page open, copy your unsaved text, and reload before you edit. See What "Not Saved, Retry" Means.
What If Your Content Looks Missing?
Check the easy things first. Click the Refresh button in the bottom bar. Check that you're in the right book (the list at the top of the Chapters panel) and the right section (click its name in the sidebar). Most "missing" content is just somewhere else. If it's still gone, every save is kept, so your work is very likely recoverable. Contact support. See What to Do If Your Content Disappears.
Not sure where to start? The Course Coach inside the app guides you through every step, so you're never stuck on a button.
Step 2: Choose Your Storage
The first time you create or import a book, the app shows a "Choose your storage platform" screen. Pick Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or Save to This Computer. You connect once, and it's completely free.
What Is Cloud Storage?
Cloud storage is a folder that lives on the internet and not on your computer. Think of a storage unit you can open from any device, instead of a filing cabinet in one room of your house. The app connects to a storage account you already own (Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive), or to a folder on your own computer. That way, your book files and audiobook files live somewhere that's truly yours, and not only inside the app. Every option is free to connect and use, and storing a manuscript or an audiobook's files costs nothing.
Why Does the App Ask for It?
A real backup copy of your book then lives somewhere you control. You connect once, and the app remembers it for every new or imported book, anywhere in the app: the Writing Studio, My Books and the Global Book Translator's import. No reconnecting.
Which Option Should You Choose?
- Google Drive. The easiest for almost everyone. Have a Gmail address? Then you already have Google Drive. Go to drive.google.com and sign in with your Gmail email and password.
- Dropbox and OneDrive. The app makes its own folder for you the first time you connect. Nothing to set up by hand, and a brand new empty account is the easiest case.
- Save to This Computer. Saves straight into a folder on your own computer. No account needed.
No Google account yet? You can make one for free in a couple of minutes at accounts.google.com/signup. It asks for a name, an email address you like and a password. There's no credit card and no payment information anywhere. It's just like getting a free email address, and Google Drive comes with it. Want to watch someone do it? Search YouTube for "how to create a Gmail account."
What Is the Google Drive Folder Step?
Right after you connect Google Drive, you choose or create a folder. You can't skip it.
- Click 📁 Choose a folder to browse your Drive one level at a time and pick any folder, including subfolders.
- Or type a name and click + Create to make a new folder.
Dropbox and OneDrive don't have this step, because their app folder is created for you.
How Do You Change the Google Drive Folder Later?
Click your profile picture, then Connected Services, then Change folder. That only redirects future backups. Anything already saved stays in the old folder, and nothing is moved or deleted.
How Does Save to This Computer Work?
In Chrome or Edge, you pick a folder once (or create one in the same window), and every future save goes there. In Safari, Firefox and Brave, the option still works, but those browsers can't remember a folder, so they ask where to save every time. That's a limit of those browsers.
Can You Use iCloud?
There's no iCloud button, because Apple doesn't offer a way to connect to it. But here's an easy way: choose Save to This Computer, and point it at a folder inside your Mac's iCloud Drive. iCloud's own sync carries it to the cloud and to your other Apple devices. See How to Keep Your Book in iCloud.
Where Do Your Audiobook Files Go?
Into your own Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive, and never onto our servers. The app makes a "Golden Bestseller Empire" folder once in your storage, then a folder named after your book, then an "Audio" folder. You don't have to do anything. If you make a clip again, the new one replaces the old one, so you won't get duplicates.
Is This How Your Typing Is Saved?
No. Every keystroke autosaves to the app's own database, whether or not you connected storage. Your storage adds a second, automatic backup copy. You can also use Export at the top right of the Writing Studio to download a real PDF or ePub to your computer any time. See Is My Book Safe?.
What If You Close the Window Without Choosing?
To create or import a book, the connection is needed, so closing the window cancels that action. No book is created, and nothing is saved for that try. Click + Create New Book or the import button again, and connect to carry on. A book you already have open keeps autosaving no matter what.
Step 3: Connect Google Drive
Google Drive is the easiest way to keep a backup copy of your book. Have a Gmail address? Then you already have Google Drive, and there's nothing new to sign up for.
How Do You Connect Google Drive?
- The first time you create or import a book, the Choose your storage platform screen appears. Pick Google Drive.
- You're sent to Google to sign in and allow the connection.
- Right after, you choose or create a folder in your own Drive. You can't skip this step.
How Do You Choose Your Folder?
After you connect, you have two options:
- Click 📁 Choose a folder to browse your Drive one level at a time and pick any folder, including subfolders.
- Or type a name and click + Create to make a brand new folder.
What Does the App Put in Your Drive?
An extra backup copy of your whole book. Your typing always saves to your account first. Your Drive copy is made in the background, and whenever you click Save to Your Cloud. See Autosave and Save to Your Cloud.
How Do You Change Your Folder Later?
Click your profile picture, then Connected Services, then Change folder. That only redirects future backups. Anything already saved stays in the old folder.
Does It Cost Anything?
No. It's free to connect and use. See How to Connect Cloud Storage.
Where Do Your Audiobook Files Go?
Into your own Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive too, and never onto our servers. See The Audiobook Creator and Your Manuscript.
Step 4: Or Connect Dropbox or OneDrive
Use Dropbox or OneDrive? Pick it on the Choose your storage platform screen, and sign in. The app makes its own folder for you, so there's nothing to set up by hand.
How Do You Connect Dropbox or OneDrive?
- The first time you create or import a book, the Choose your storage platform screen appears.
- Pick Dropbox or OneDrive.
- You're sent to Dropbox or Microsoft to sign in and allow the connection.
Do You Need to Choose a Folder?
No. Dropbox and OneDrive don't have the folder step that Google Drive has. Their app folder is made for you, and a brand new empty account is the easiest case.
What Is Saved There?
An extra backup copy of your book, and your audiobook files. Your typing always saves to your account first. See Autosave and Save to Your Cloud.
Step 5: Or Save to Your Own Computer
Want your backups on your own computer? Pick Save to This Computer, choose a folder, and every future save goes there. It works best in Chrome, Edge or Opera.
How Do You Set It Up?
- On the Choose your storage platform screen, pick Save to This Computer.
- Choose a folder on your computer, or create one in the same window.
- That's it. Future saves go to that folder.
Which Browsers Work?
Chrome, Edge and Opera. They can remember the folder you picked.
What About Safari, Firefox and Brave?
They can't remember a folder. In those browsers, a save becomes a normal download, and you choose where it goes every time. Brave blocks folder saving on purpose, for privacy, even though it's built on Chrome's technology. Want the one-time folder? Use Chrome.
Is Your Folder Stored on Our Servers?
No. Your browser keeps the folder choice to itself, and it means nothing outside the browser you picked it in. Use the same browser next time, and pick the folder again on another computer.
Does This Replace Autosave?
No. Everything you type still saves to your account automatically. Your computer folder is an extra copy. See Autosave and Save to Your Cloud.
Can You Use iCloud?
Yes, in a roundabout way. See How to Keep Your Book in iCloud.
Step 6: Keep Your Book in iCloud
There's no separate iCloud button, because Apple doesn't offer a way to connect to it. But there's an easy way: save to a folder that lives inside your iCloud Drive.
How Do You Keep Your Book in iCloud?
- On your Mac, make a folder inside iCloud Drive, for example "My Book Backups."
- In the Writing Studio, choose Save to This Computer, and pick that folder.
- iCloud's own sync carries the copies to the cloud and to your other Apple devices.
Which Browser Do You Need?
Chrome, Edge or Opera, because they can remember the folder. See How to Save Your Book to Your Own Computer.
Step 7: Manage Everything in Connected Services
Connected Services is one card in your profile that shows everything you've connected with your own account or key, all in one place.
What Is in Connected Services?
- Cloud Storage. Shows what you connected, like Google Drive, with Change folder and Disconnect.
- Gemini (Site wide generator use).
- Claude (Writing Coach & Editor).
- ChatGPT (Writing Coach & Editor).
- ElevenLabs. For the Audiobook Creator.
- Scraper (Category Scout).
Each one shows Connected or Not connected. If it isn't connected, there's a Connect button.
How Do You Open It?
Click your profile picture at the top right, and choose Connected Services.
How Do You Change Your Google Drive Folder?
Click Change folder next to Cloud Storage. It only redirects future backups. Anything already saved stays where it is.
How Do You Connect or Disconnect a Service?
Click Connect to add it, or Disconnect to remove it. Connecting an API key is super easy. It takes just a few seconds, and the app guides you.
Step 8: Know What Is Kept Private
Your book saves to your own account as you type. Backup copies and audiobook files go to storage you choose. The AI tools send your text only to the provider whose key you connected.
Where Is Your Book Saved?
In the app's own database, tied to your account, shortly after you stop typing. Nothing is kept only in your browser. See Autosave and Save to Your Cloud.
Can You Lose Your Writing?
Every save is also kept as a permanent snapshot, so a mistake never costs you your work for good. If you need an earlier version, email contact@goldenbestseller.com. See Is My Book Safe?.
Where Does Your Backup Copy Go?
To storage you own: Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or a folder on your computer. See How to Connect Cloud Storage.
Where Do Your Audiobook Files Go?
Into your own Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive, and never onto our servers. The app makes a "Golden Bestseller Empire" folder, then a folder for that book, then an "Audio" folder.
What Do the AI Tools Send?
They use your own API key, and they send text to the provider you picked (Claude, Gemini or ChatGPT):
- The Writing Coach sees your current section and its Writer's Prompt.
- The Section Editor works on the section you're in.
- The Final Editor sends your complete current draft each time you run it.
Every provider has its own privacy rules, so please check your provider's policy if you want the details.
Who Can See Your API Key?
Your key is saved with your account and used through the app's server to call the provider you picked. Never paste a secret key, a password or your whole private manuscript into the Course Coach chat or into an email. The Course Coach never asks for a key.
What If You Have Another Privacy Question?
